Introducing me (or in my case “Big Sis”)

The person behind Big Sis Nutrition –

My name is Bianca, I am based in Melbourne and I have recently finished my Masters of Dietetics which makes me a DIETITIAN!

I say it like that because I receive a lot of confused looks when I say I’m doing Dietetics
(DIE – EH – TET – TICKS) – which is fair enough because it doesn’t exactly sound like “Dietitian” (DIE – EH – TEE – SHUN).

* ALSO as a side note whenever I have been approached by a male in a bar, and I say this: a lot of them go “oh yeah” and walk away, not the sexy profession I imagined it would be.

Previous to that I did a Bachelor of Health Sciences, and a Bachelor of Food & Nutrition Sciences honours year. The honours year was a spur of the moment decision, thinking that there was no way I would get into the Dietetics course with my marks from undergrad because it was well known that they only take the best (allegedly), and I definitely was not the best academically.
On my first day of honours I thought “What. Have. I. Done – someone is going to see my marks and pull me out of this course immediately, my supervisor will know I’m a fraud”

*Fast Forward to now and honours was not as bad as I had envisioned at all and was super rewarding*

If you add all those years of study together, it makes five and a half years…
Of course though, I’m someone who is slow and steady so I stretched out my undergraduate degree an extra six months, so I finished mid-year, meaning I couldn’t do anything for the second 6 months of the year.

Yes – I have been at university for 6 and a half years, to be “just” a dietitian, I should’ve been a doctor… (just one of my MANY favourite comments from people).

So here you are, you have stumbled upon this blog by chance, or maybe you have very consciously clicked on the link and you’re wondering how this is different from any other nutrition blog you’ve ever read, and how you’ve ended up here. Think of it as – Personal/Lifestyle Blogger Meets Dietitian.

I have started this blog with the hopes of breaking down the stereotypes, or perceptions that dietitians are the food police who are constantly judging all your food choices – because we are health professionals, and our key motivation is to help people improve their health through nutrition.

I’ll be delivering evidence based nutrition information but adding a bit of my own flair, in a candid and (hopefully) relatable way. What do you want to know? What nutrition questions do you have?!
