Managing the healing process postpartum

A reproductive health dietitian can assist you with tailored support for new mothers to get their postpartum nutrition back on track.

Support During Breastfeeding

Having a diet that is adequate in key nutrients is important during all life stages, but none more than during the period where women breastfeed.

Breastfeeding uses extra energy to produce breast milk, and feed your growing baby. Women need to consume extra energy to keep up with the demands of breastfeeding, and reduce the risk of nutrient deficiencies.

Our goal is to provide you with personalised nutrition advice to ensure you and your baby are getting the right nutrition.

Preparation For Future Pregnancies

Pregnancy, labour and birth is a massive change for the body. Regardless of how your baby entered the world, you will need to take time to focus on healing and nourishing your body.

Whether you had a planned or emergency C-section, or a vaginal birth, a complicated pregnancy, or a “textbook” pregnancy your body has been through a MAJOR change.

Adequate nutrition postpartum is vital to ensure you can heal physically and emotionally.

Relationship With Food And Body

Postpartum can be a really beautiful time, however it can also give rise to a lot of negative feelings about your new body. An experienced pregnancy dietitian can help you to improve your relationship with food and your body, so you can model positive behaviours and attitudes for your children.

Making peace with food and your body will make you the best version of yourself, and give you the ability to be there for yourself and your children.

Frequently Asked Questions

A women’s health dietitian is a dietitian that has a passion for women and educating women around how to best manage their individual conditions. A women’s health dietitian will have often upskilled in this specific area through self study, research and extra courses.

When working with a women’s health dietitian, you can feel confident that you are working with someone who really wants to show up and be there for their clients.

It is a progressive process. Each consultation you have, you will feel closer to reaching your goals. Dietitians offer individualised advice for each client. There is no “one size fits all” with treatment, so there is no timeline for when one might see results.

Once you and your dietitian believe that you are confident in navigating your food and nutrition, and meeting your original goals, this is a good indication that you are getting results.

All consultations are conducted online. Prior to your first consultation, you will need to complete a new patient form prior to seeing the dietitian. This will be sent to you via email.

If you have any recent results from your doctor, feel free to bring them along! Otherwise, you don’t need to bring anything – just yourself!

After the consultation, we will schedule a follow up appointment, but if you have any questions or concerns between appointments, your dietitian will be available to answer your questions via email or phone call.

There are key nutrients to include in your diet to assist with healing, and supporting good mental health, and having an experienced pregnancy dietitian there to support you can make this transition into motherhood easier.

There are a few key things to focus on if you are planning on having another baby within 2 years of your last. Improving nutrient deficiencies, and making sure you are eating well for breastfeeding and taking an appropriate prenatal.
At Big Sis Nutrition we can help you achieve this and more with tailored education and advice around your intake and food choices.

One of the main foods or nutrients of concern is water. To have an adequate supply of breastmilk, and reduce the risk of dehydration women must consume enough water throughout the day. All fluids count towards total intake across the day, however water is the preferred drink during breastfeeding as caffeine and alcohol can pass through into breastmilk.

Protein is a key macronutrient, used for growth and repair in the body. Breastfeeding women can be at risk of low protein intake when breastfeeding. At any life stage, it is not recommended you pursue a restrictive diet. This is crucial in periods of preconception, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Restricting your intake during breastfeeding can reduce your milk supply, and also leave you feeling depleted and at risk of nutrient deficiency.

During breastfeeding, and pregnancy the baby takes calcium from the mothers bones to make bones and teeth. Women are at risk of low bone density, and osteoporosis if they do not consume adequate amounts of calcium.

During pregnancy, baby takes from the mothers iron stores to set them up for their first 6 months of life, or until they begin solids. Breastfeeding also makes use of your iron stores, and is a time where iron containing foods should be a key feature of your diet.
